Suzuki GN400 ‘Lucille’

By July 13, 2017Cafe Racer

Happiness! We finally got round to Lucille’s (a.k.a “Project Jenni’) photo shoot. She’s actually been enjoying Cape Town’s near perfect roads for a couple of months now but things being very busy in the workshop, the blog has taken a back seat.

Ryan delivered the donor bike to our care around October last year intending do some minor cosmetic modifications to the tail area but as so often happens, the project evolved as time and changes progressed. On this count we must again thank Ryan for being so patient. We always recommend our clients stay involved with the project. It helps to keep the riding blues at bay.

For the design of this traditional café racer we started off with a Suzuki GS250 tank which we lifted at the rear for a more aggressive appearance. This left a gap below the tank which was filled by re-manufacturing the unit to include steel skirts along the bottom end, effecting the straight back-bone, or base line, required for such a build. Next up was the seat and cowl which was also custom made in steel, and destined to hold the battery. A new and more compact lithium unit from Motobatt was selected for the job and one of our custom stitched leather seats in brown ads texture to the mix.

The head stock was restored with new switch-gear and mounted with an Acewell all-in-one unit with the blue lcd complementing the palette nicely. The subtle two-tone paint scheme of light coffee and burnt tobacco is perfectly understated with the darker colour running along the base line skirt at the bottom of the fuel tank and back along and over the all steel, single unit seat-pan and rear cowl.

As you can see Lucille’s done 6000 faultless kilometers in the last 60 days. Ryan says she’s a huge conversation starter wherever she goes and she’s even played a handy access card to a hidden and spectacular café racer collection in the area of Riebeeck Kasteel.
